Idea

An eBay seller takes a quick phone photo of an item and has the eBay app swap the messy background for a cleaner one.

What it does for you

  • Removes the original background from a listing photo.
  • Places the item on a backdrop you pick: solid colors, outdoor scenes, studio-style or tabletop settings.
  • Helps sellers without lighting gear or editing skills look more professional.
  • Builds on eBay’s older tool, which only swapped in a plain white background.

How it works

  1. In the eBay app, go to the Selling tab and choose List an item, or edit an existing listing.
  2. Upload or take the product photo.
  3. Use background removal to isolate the item.
  4. Pick an AI-generated backdrop and apply it.
  5. Review the photo, then finish the listing as usual.

Status (what the sources say): eBay’s June 2024 story said the tool launched in the iOS app in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, with Android to follow “over the coming months”. eBay Australia’s Seller Centre page (October 2024 news, still live in 2026) calls it free and available in the eBay app and lists the steps above. eBay’s April 2025 story calls it part of its AI listing tools. UNVERIFIED: whether Android rollout finished and which countries have it today. No 2026 eBay page we fetched states current coverage, so check your app. Tech: eBay says it uses open-source Stable Diffusion inpainting models plus eBay data, built with its Responsible AI team, and that the listing flow reminds sellers to check images for accuracy. Time/cost (rough estimate): seconds to minutes per photo; eBay Australia calls it free. Normal selling fees still apply. Prerequisites: the current eBay app and a well-lit, in-focus photo.

Build it

  1. Update the eBay app and open the photo step of a listing to see which tools you have.
  2. Shoot the item filling most of the frame, with a clear edge between item and surface.
  3. Remove the background and try two or three backdrops.
  4. Use this review checklist:

- Edges: no chopped corners, halos or missing handles/straps
- Color: item color unchanged
- Shadows: believable, not floating
- Honesty: scratches/wear still visible?
- Consistency: same backdrop across all items in a batch
  1. Keep the enhanced photo as the main image and add unedited shots that show condition.
  2. Reuse one backdrop style for a whole batch.

Pitfalls

  • AI edges struggle with transparent, shiny or thin items such as glass, jewelry chains and fur.
  • Don’t let a polished backdrop hide damage; that leads to returns and disputes. eBay itself built in accuracy reminders.
  • Generated scenes can change how colors read.
  • Be open about AI-edited images where appropriate, as eBay’s own guidance suggests.
  • Availability differs by region and platform.

# Agent setup: Clean up eBay listing photos with the AI background tool

## Goal
Help the user improve listing photos with the eBay app's background removal and AI backdrops, while keeping the item's condition honestly visible.

## Ask the user first
- Phone platform (iOS or Android) and country. eBay launched on iOS in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, and current Android and country coverage is UNVERIFIED, so the user checks their app.
- What they sell, and whether items are shiny, transparent or very thin, since those are hard for background removal.
- Whether they want one consistent look across their shop.

## Steps
1. Have the user update the eBay app and open the photo step of a listing (Selling, List an item) to see if background options appear.
2. Give shooting tips: item fills the frame, even light, clear contrast with the surface.
3. The user removes the background and tries two or three backdrops (solid color, outdoor or tabletop scene).
4. Review the result with the user using a checklist: edges, color, shadows, and visible wear or damage.
5. Agree on one backdrop style for a batch.
6. Keep the enhanced photo as the main image and add unedited shots of condition.
7. If the tool isn't available, suggest eBay's plain white background removal or a neutral home setup instead.

## Checks
- The item's color and shape match reality.
- All flaws are visible in at least one photo.
- One consistent backdrop style is used across the batch.
